Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was raised by her grandmother and she was an only child. Scott graduated from The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. In addition to working two jobs part-time, she was also a teacher in Temple University. She was hoping to become the high school's English teacher. After 3 years of working as teacher's assistant and studying, her dream to become a high school English teacher was cut short. She started her career as a spoken-word artist, performing her own work at live poetry readings and later joined forces to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. In a Roots show she came out to be an artist. She then secured collaborations, including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She also gained experiences on the stage, as she appeared in the Canada tour of the Broadway show Rent. She became the first signed artist on the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
